Five flmmakers will create short films to spread awareness of thalassemia.

The Cooley's Anemia Foundation thanks Panasonic Broadcast and Abel Cine Tech for this unique partnering opportunity and for their gracious help in spreading awareness of thalassemia.

February 1, 2008 - Panasonic, Abel Cine Tech and the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation are proud to announce that five filmmakers have been chosen to receive the first-ever Panasonic “P2 for a Cause” Filmmakers Grants. Stephen M. Harris, Marquette Jones, A. Shaun Kurian, Rehana Mirza and Kat Rohrer are the recipients who will use their talents to create short films that raise awareness of the blood disorder thalassemia, also known as Cooley’s anemia.

Abel Cine Tech supports the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation in their efforts against this disease. We also support emerging filmmakers and are pleased to lend our support to the five grant winners.

Stephen M. Harris – Time
This film is an exploration of a young man’s daily frustrations with “never having enough time,” as compared with a person who has thalassemia, for whom this common complaint is actually true.

Marquette Jones – Knowing is Half the Battle
This documentary will explain the importance (and simplicity) of getting tested for the thalassemia trait and how this information can help in family planning decisions.

A. Shaun Kurian – A Journey of Courage and Hope: Living with Thalassemia
Using the images in a family photo album, this film will chronicle the unique and significant life experiences of thalassemia patients, their friends and families, and others whom they meet along life's journey.

Rehana Mirza – Silence is Not the Cure
This film will focus on members of communities most at risk for thalassemia, including those of South Asian, Chinese, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern descent. It will highlight the importance of bringing the subject out into the open in order to help patients and find a cure.

Kat Rohrer – Through the Eyes of Our Children
Shot from the point of view of children from different families – one affected by thalassemia, one not – this film will allow the children to interact and explore each other's worlds, thus bringing about greater understanding.

“We are thrilled to have received such imaginative projects from such talented filmmakers and excited that the Foundation’s fight against thalassemia will benefit from their unique visions,” said Gina Cioffi, National Executive Director of the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation. “And we once again express our appreciation to Panasonic and to Abel Cine Tech for partnering with us on such a meaningful project.”

Each of the grant winners will receive, courtesy of Panasonic, the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation and Abel Cine Tech, the use of an AG-HPX500 P2 HD Camcorder, Fujinon lens, four 16GB P2 cards, an AG-HPG10 P2 Gear and $2000 towards production costs.

One grand prize winner will be selected from among the finished films. The filmmaker will receive a prize package worth more then $10,500. This grand prize will consist of a Panasonic AG-HVX200, with two 16GB P2 cards, a $5,000 cash prize and a screening at a Cooley’s Anemia Foundation fundraising event.

The grand prize winner will be announced on February 1, 2009.
