The students at Susan E. Wagner High School deserve special recognition for their sterling efforts to maintain our blood supply.

by Craig Butler

February 14, 2008 - Two days before Valentine’s Day, students at Susan E. Wagner High School in Staten Island, NY demonstrated just how big their hearts are by donating blood in a special Cooley’s anemia blood drive – and broke a record in the process.

Students Steven Gilberto and Meagan Font headed up the enormously successful effort, resulting in the collection of 165 units of blood – which is the largest amount ever collected at a blood drive at a school in Staten Island. In all, more than 180 people turned out to make a donation.

Steven, a member of Wagner’s Falcons football team, and Meagan, a member of the school’s Student Organization, put a tremendous amount of effort into this drive. Their skills and talent were very much on display at every step of the way, and their motivation was increased by their desire to do something to help people born with Cooley’s anemia.

Blood Services of Brooklyn and Staten Island managed the blood drive and also provided gift cards to Subway Sandwiches for participants. Life Quality Motor Sales generously donated t-shirts for all those who gave blood.

In addition to Steve Gilberto and Meagan Font, special thanks is due to Pat Kane, coordinator of student affairs, and Coach Al Paturzo for their assistance in making the blood drive possible.

Gina Cioffi, Esq., National Executive Director of the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, says, “Our deepest thanks and appreciation go to all those who made this drive such an overwhelming success, and especially to Steven and Meagan. It is inspiring to see so many people roll up their sleeves to help people with Cooley’s anemia, and everyone who needs blood.”
